I learned that knowing the steps is not the same as being able to do them.
In April 2025, I joined my first systematic CPR and AED training. I had already read and watched a lot about first aid, but kneeling in front of a training manikin felt completely different. Knowing the steps and being able to perform them under pressure are not the same thing.

I practiced chest compressions, rescue breathing, AED pad placement, and responding to device prompts. The training made me realize that first aid has standards and requires repetition; watching a few videos is not the same as being trained.

In the summer of 2026, after turning 16, I took the training again, received my Red Cross first-aider certificate, and registered as a volunteer. I also began to notice that training opportunities do exist, but many students simply do not know where to find them.

During the same summer, I also joined an AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course at Shanghai Renji Hospital. Because I already had a Red Cross training foundation, I started paying more attention to differences in teaching order, wording, and hands-on practice.
I was happy to earn both certificates, but what mattered more was repeating the same core skills in two different training settings and noticing how each course taught ordinary people to act in an emergency.

In the AHA course, I practiced CPR, emergency judgment, and basic life-support skills again. Repeating similar material made me notice details I had missed the first time, and helped me understand the gap between remembering information and building a skill.

After completing both courses, I understood first-aid training in a more concrete way: it is not about memorizing a flowchart, but about practicing a standard response until an ordinary person has a better chance of knowing what to do under pressure.
For public display, sensitive information such as ID numbers, certificate numbers, and QR codes has been redacted.

This later became one reason we tried to bring Red Cross training onto campus. If the resources already exist, perhaps one useful thing students can do is help classmates discover them, sign up, and actually complete the training.
